I always aim to meet higher education faculty where they are, then work to teach backwards design. This means we establish the learning outcomes of the online course, create aligned assessments, and then actually begin building the learning materials and activities for the course. After the fundamentals of the course are designed then we can get creative with #edtech solutions.
Facilitating the course is completely different process. Online students must have a safe learning environment modeled by the instructor. I coach faculty to have a strong social presence and provide timely and constructive feedback on assignments, exams, and projects. Like with anything, practice makes perfect and I reassure faculty that they will get better and better with each course offered online.
